Recent records of marine mammals in Tanzanian waters

Marine mammal species diversity off Zanzibar and Tanzania, East Africa, has been recorded by the Mammal Education Research Group at Institute of Sciences, Zanzibar, Tanzania since 1998. The data presented in this report reflect efforts 10 years collection information from marine mammals stranded incidentally caught Tanzanian waters. Additional dedicated surveys cetaceans (whales dolphins) incidental sightings reported general public are also provided. From 1992 through 2008 a total 235 specimens 13 cetacean dugong were recorded. 214 (90.7%) records referred to bycatch drift bottom-set gillnets 22 (9.3%) strandings.
